PURPOSIVE WORK IN A REALIST SAMPLING STRATEGY
* * *
This chapter considers the purposive work of realist sampling strategies, how this work is directed and re-cast through the presuppositions we bring to the research, alongside the external powers and liabilities we reflexively account for in research. Considerable intellectual work is done in the very early stages of our research, when plans are no more than ideas jotted down on the first page of a new notebook. Based on our theoretical understanding of the world, gained through our education, life-experiences, our interaction with the social world, the scholarly communities and research networks of which we are part we think that it is worthwhile doing a particular piece of research. Internal generative mechanisms will be brought to bear on the choices we make about whom or what to sample. Additionally, we will also seek, as best we can, to disclose the contingent powers and liabilities that shape the research, and by extension our sampling choices. These early processes of intellectual and reflexive engagement with the research problem are often described as scoping exercises. A far better metaphor for these processes, I contend, is getting out of the swamp. The work of getting out of the swamp is an effort every qualitative researcher undertakes. Few, it must be said, make much of this process in reports from research, perhaps feeling that giving an account of this work goes against the grain of grounded theory approaches to research. But when it is honestly reported it makes eminent sense.
